July and August Microgrant Awards

Sustainable Ocean Alliance exists to propel global solutions to our ocean's crises—and to empower the leaders behind them. Today, we are proud to introduce the latest batch of Ocean Leadership Microgrants from July and August 2022 that help move this mission forward.

Increasing Fisheries’ Resilience to Climate Change (United States and Mexico)

This microgrant award supports project leader Niza Contreras and her work in affiliation with Comunidad y Biodiversidad (COBI). Niza is leading a research project to understand the adaptive strategies fishing cooperatives in Mexico are utilizing to maintain fish populations as climate changes. Her goal is to provide these strategies in an open-source database to inform US fisheries along coastal California and beyond.

Amigos del Estero, Amigos del Oceano (Ecuador)

This grant award supports one of the Aiguitos del Océano Foundation's youth engagement and education initiatives. "Amigos del Estero, Amigos del Oceano" educates children 8-14 years old as"Ecoleaders" and for this project they will create a storybook about mangrove ecosystems and take trips to clean up local mangroves.

ProjectQRRestore (Mexico)

This grant supports Project QRRestore in taking the first steps as a formally registered US nonprofit.To be able to start to restore the coral reefs off the coast of Quintana Roo and mitigate the sargassum blooms, their team will undertake a PADI Coral Reef conservation training course; a team that includes a local Mayan conservationist and leaders from the SOA Mexico Hub.

JCCYC Marine Education Podcast Series (Jamaica)

Through this grant award, Fulbright Scholar Emme Christie will lead the production of a  Jamaica Climate Change Youth Council (JCCYC) podcast and social media series on marine ecology, environmental impact assessments, and climate change. The podcast aims to speak to Caribbean youth about issues particularly relevant to their local realities.

Mi Manglar: Restauración y Conservación Manglares (Colombia)

Mi Manglar involves the local community in mangrove education, cleanup, monitoring and restoration. They will plant 1,000 seedlings across .2 hectares and create a group of "guardians" to monitor the site.

Restoring Mangrove Ecosystems in India (India)

This microgrant award supports the Prameya Foundation as they expand their work with community-led conservation action in the Sundarbans—the world’s largest mangrove forest. They aim to train local women and youth and equip them with the tools to restore local mangrove forests. Together they aim to plant 12,000 mangroves across 3.5 hectares.
