"Managing and Conserving Deep-Sea Ecosystems" is an intergenerational panel about bringing inclusivity into global strategies for management of the deep sea. A side event of the United Nations Ocean Conference 2022, this discussion will explore the ongoing effort to create a moratorium on deep sea mining, including management strategies for the deep sea, implications of deep sea mining, and why it is critical that we keep deep sea ecosystems intact.

Featuring panelists from around the world, this discussion will spotlight an array of perspectives from both youth leaders and industry experts.

Sylvia3-4843_-_Mission_Blue_4000x2200 (1)Dr. Sylvia Earle (United States) Oceanographer— Dr. Sylvia Earle is the founder of Mission Blue, a National Geographic Explorer at Large, the Founder of Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, the former Chief Scientist of NOAA, Time Magazine's first Hero for the Planet, and an IUCN Patron with years at sea and thousands of hours under the ocean.

Kaja Lønne Fjærtoft (Norway) Senior Advisor, Sustainable OceansKaja is a marine biologist and science communicator with a love for the deep sea and mapping. She has previously worked with international development programs at GRID Arendal, managing environmental impacts of industry at the Norwegian Environment Agency, and now is working for sustainable oceans in World Wide Fund for Nature. She spends her free time organising ocean festivals through the organisation Passion for Ocean, and teaches freediving to kids.

Maria Pena Ermida (Portugal) PhD Candidate, Católica Global School of Law In 2016 Maria Pena Ermida completed her law degree at Universidade Católica Portuguesa where she discovered her passion for law of the Sea. She decided to further her knowledge by enrolling in an Interdisciplinary Post-Graduate Programme in Sea Sciences and Business administration offered by the University of Lisbon and Universidade Católica Portuguesa where she encountered Deep-Sea Mining as an activity for the first time. With this in mind she pursued a Master's Degree in International and European Law where she wrote a dissertation entitled "The Precautionary Principle Applied to Deep-Sea Mining". She is a PhD Candidate at Católica Global School of Law and a researcher at Católica Centre for the Future of Law where she is studying International Obligations and their role in governance and resource management in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

IMG_2215_cropped (1)Moderated by Dr. Diva Amon (Trinidad and Tobago), Deep Sea Biologist, Benioff Ocean InitiativeDr. Diva Amon is a Caribbean marine biologist focused on the little-known habitats and animals of the deep ocean, and how our actions are impacting them. She works at the nexus of science, policy and communication and has a deep desire to see stewardship measures applied to the deep ocean as well as the engagement of a broader group of global stakeholders towards this effort.

This event will be held in person at the United Nations Ocean Conference at the Ocean Basecamp at Marina do Parque das Nações (Passeio do Adamastor, Edifício Nau, 1990-007 Lisboa)
