9/29/22: The aspiring ‘coral factory’ restoring reefs wrecked by climate change

SOA Startup: Coral Vita 

As the threat against reefs have intensified, researchers are introducing innovative methods to farm, grow, and plant healthy corals more efficiently. Coral Vita aims to grow corals up to 50 times faster than in nature, improve their resilience to climate change, and provide large-scale restoration services through land-based farms. 

9/26/22: Dewa and Dutch start-up Desolenator to build solar-powered desalination system

SOA Startup: Desolenator

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has signed a partnership agreement with Desolenator to build a carbon-neutral water purification and desalination system that is completely powered by solar energy, costing less than $0.02 per litre of potable water. 

9/22/22: Novoloop partners with ON Running Recycled Shoes

SOA Startup: Novoloop

Novoloop, an emerging leader in plastic circularity, announced its partnership with the Swiss sports brand On featuring Novoloop’s thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the outsole for On’s newest carbon capture consortium shoe, Cloudprime.

9/22/22: Immersive ‘Plastic Reality Project’ Targets Waste Reduction

SOA Startup: rePurpose Global

rePurpose Global launched the Plastic Reality Project this month, a first-of-its-kind sustainability initiative dedicated to upskilling and arming corporate leaders and environmental practitioners with knowledge and experiences to help shape plastic reduction efforts towards reduced inefficiencies, broader inclusivity, and greater impact. 

9/15/22: 3D printing lays ground for coral reef rescue push

SOA Grantee: archiREEF

20 square meters of artificial coral reefs will be built in Hong Kong’s Deep Water Bay using the world's first 3D-printed terracotta reef tiles, created by SOA Grantee archiREEF, to rehabilitate the coral habitat in Hong Kong's southern waters over the next three years.

9/14/22: How Kenyans help themselves and the planet by saving mangrove trees

SOA Grantee: Mikoko Pamoja

Through Mikoko Pamoja, residents of Gazi and nearby Makongeni are cultivating an economic ecosystem that relies on efforts to preserve and restore the mangrove forests. Revenue from these carbon credits is split between salaries, project costs, and village improvements to health care, sanitation, schools, and more.

9/13/22: tēnaka receives the Greentech Innovation Label

SOA Startup: tēnaka

Ocean regeneration startup, tēnaka, received the GreenTech Innovations Label in the Maritime Innovations and Marine Ecosystems category from the French Ministry of Ecological Transition as recognition by the State for their positive environmental impact, model, and growth prospects.

9/1/22: Calwave Successfully Concludes Historic Wave Energy Pilot in California with Zero Intervention and 99% Uptime

SOA Startup: CalWave

CalWave, a leader in wave energy development, has successfully concluded its open-ocean wave energy pilot after 10 months of continuous operation off the coast of San Diego. The project, which deployed in September 2021, was supported by a US Department of Energy (DOE) award with the goal to demonstrate CalWave’s scalable and patented xWave™ technology as a cost-effective, sustainable solution for energy generation.
