Talking about the Deep Sea

What is the deep sea? How can the Youth mobilize to preserve its wonders? Those are some of the questions to be addressed by SOA European hubs’ next webinar.

Taking place virtually on Zoom on March 18th 2021, at 6 pm CET / 10 am PT.

We will have the honor to host Ocean conservationists Philippe Cousteau, deep-sea scientist Diva Amon and the former director of OEMMR at ISA Dr. Sandor Mulsow for a unique conversation.

As an introduction, we will have the pleasure to screen footages from the deep sea taken by our partner Schmidt Ocean Institute. The event will be graphically facilitated by the artist Fanny Didou (@sketchingthemove), who will draw live during our webinar to capture the essence of our conversation.

Philippe Cousteau

Inspired by the legacy of his grandfather of Jacques Cousteau, Philippe is an multi Emmy-Nominated TV host and producer as well as an author, speaker, and social entrepreneur. He is also producer and host of a three-part series exploring innovation for sustainability in business sponsored by United Technologies. In addition, Philippe is the host and executive producer of the multi-Emmy nominated series Awesome Planet, now filming its fourth season which is syndicated on Fox and Hulu.

Philipe and his wife Ashlan are the stars of The Travel Channel’s newest series Caribbean Pirate Treasure. It follows the Cousteau's as they travel around the Caribbean, diving into maritime mysteries, exploring pirate histories and investigating the lore of lost treasures.

Ashlan Cousteau

Veteran journalist and adventurer, Ashlan Gorse Cousteau, travels the world in search of stories that entertain and inspire. From diving with great white sharks off Mexico, searching for tigers in the jungles of Nepal and filming caribou migrations in the Arctic, Cousteau engages viewers through incredible storytelling and experiences. Ashlan’s documentary, Nuclear Sharks, for Discovery Channel’s Shark Week 2016 premiered as the #1 rated show across all cable programming.

Diva Amon

Dr. Diva Amon is a Trinidadian deep-sea biologist working at the nexus of science, policy, and communication. Diva studies the weird and wonderful animals living in a range of deep-sea habitats and how our actions are impacting them. She also participates in expeditions around the world and has an extensive science communication and outreach record. She is a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum in London, a Pew-Bertarelli Ocean Ambassador, and a Director and Founder of the non-profit NGO, SpeSeas, dedicated to marine science, education and advocacy in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.

Dr. Sandor Mulsow

Dr. Sandor Mulsow is a Marine Geologist working on environmental and territorial understanding at Universidad Austral de Chile - Valdivia. He is the former Director of the Office of Environmental Management and Mineral Resources at the International Seabed Authority.

Fanny Didou

Fanny Didou (@sketchingthemove) is a graphic designer and artist dedicated to sustainable transitions. She has worked on many Ocean conservation projects worldwide and will capture the essence of our webinar through a live graphic facilitation.
