It's no secret that World Oceans Day is a bit more than a once-a-year occurrence for us here at SOA. We believe that every day should reflect the intentions of World Oceans Day: "to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans."
But we do love a meaningful excuse to engage the world with new reasons (and opportunities) to protect, restore, and sustain our ocean. You may be wondering why we champion the ocean specifically – and that is because it is our biggest protection against climate change.
Did you know that the ocean:
Has absorbed 90% of excess heat created by global warming
Produces 50% of the air we breathe
Contributes $1.5 trillion to the world economy every year
And that's just a fraction of the ways the ocean sustains life on earth. You can learn more by checking out the infographic below.
