Partnering with Peace Boat
In the lead up to World Oceans Day on June 8, 2019, SOA Program Director, Brandon Levy, served as a guest educator aboard Peace Boat’s 101st Global Voyage and as a mentor for the Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors, a group of young leaders from Small Island States in the Caribbean as well as the Pacific and Indian Oceans. During his week-long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, Brandon hosted workshops and seminars for the youth and the ship's passengers on conscious leadership, systems thinking, emergent strategy, and climate change.
UN World Oceans Day
In celebration of UN World Oceans Day and UN Sustainable Development Goal 14., Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) and Peace Boat co-hosted a special event which served to highlight this year's theme of Gender and the Oceans. Through oceanside chats, keynote speeches, and entrepreneurial showcases from its young leaders, the SOA team demonstrated how the next generation are creating regenerative and inclusive solutions for our ocean and planet.
Gender and the Oceans
In her keynote address, Daniela Fernandez, Founder & CEO of SOA, touched on how to achieve inclusivity to ensure that the ocean space is accessible to all, the importance of mentorship and having female role models and also the need to better understand the obstacles that young girls and women face, before prescribing solutions.
Daniela also hosted a panel with Marissa Cuevas (microTERRA) and Julie Davitz (Bank of the West/BNP Paribas), in which they shared insights on how entrepreneurship and sustainable financing can drive innovation in the ocean space and amplify the voices of minorities in the sustainability movement.
Going forward, SOA and Peace Boat will build upon their collaboration in supporting and empowering young leaders worldwide to have their voices heard and their solutions deployed.
